After Russian-backed forces seized Donetsk in 2014, they converted the former Izolyatsia factory and art centre into a secret prison, holding Ukrainian POWs, activists, journalists and civilians accused of pro-Ukrainian sympathies outside any lawful process. Former detainees and OHCHR documented systematic torture — beatings, electric shocks, sexual violence, mock executions and forced labour. It became the most notorious detention site in occupied Donbas; its former head was sentenced to 15 years.
